A Story of Hope: John Mwangi and Young Heroes
John Mwangi was born and raised in Marurui, a place where dreams are often tested by harsh realities. As a young boy, he had big ambitions, but life took a difficult turn when he was forced to drop out of school in Form Two back in 2015 due to financial challenges. What could have been the end of his journey became the beginning of a different path—one built on resilience, courage, and purpose.
In 2016, determined not to give up, John went out in search of any opportunity he could find. He started working at a car wash, earning just enough to survive but never losing sight of his desire to grow. His hard work and persistence paid off in 2018 when he secured a job as a garbage collector. While many would see this as a low point, John saw it as a stepping stone.
Through this work, he began to understand the value of dignity in labor and the importance of community. Inspired by his own struggles, John decided to take a bold step—he started his own garbage collection group. His vision was not just to sustain himself, but to uplift others like him.
Today, John leads Young Heroes, a small but impactful initiative made up of five youths. Among them are three school-going boys, some of whom are orphans and come from vulnerable backgrounds. John provides them with part-time work during holidays and as a side hustle, helping them earn income, stay engaged, and build a sense of responsibility.
The group collects garbage using mkokoteni (handcarts), moving from households and businesses to designated holding points where the waste is stored for collection. They also offer garbage collection services for hire within the community, creating both income and cleaner surroundings.
Despite their determination, they face major challenges. Without proper equipment, their work is slow and physically demanding. John’s dream is to grow this initiative by acquiring a lorry to improve efficiency, expand their reach, and create more job opportunities for young people. He is also working towards branding their work through official documentation and recognition, giving dignity and identity to their efforts.
What makes John’s story powerful is not just where he started, but what he chose to do with his journey. From a school dropout to a community leader, he has become a beacon of hope for young people in Marurui. He believes that every young person deserves a chance, regardless of their background.
However, John and his team need support to take the next step. With a lorry, proper tools, and resources, Young Heroes can grow into a stronger initiative—creating jobs, keeping the environment clean, and giving hope to many more children.
